A major financial services company is leading the way in manufacturing modular homes that could provide a solution to the lack of housing supply in the UK.
Legal & General aims to revolutionise the house-building sector through the use of new materials and innovative production ideas.
And its factory in Leeds is at the forefront of the drive to raise productivity in house building and help to alleviate some of the shortfall in the delivery of new homes.
Quicker and more efficient delivery
Legal & General is investing millions in modular building, which is quicker and more efficient than traditional house building. Homes can be delivered in weeks rather than years with high standards of materials and skills involved from start to finish.
A BBC video offers a vivid demonstration of how a traditional factory-style production line can produce homes to live in rather than tins of beans or cars.
The factory, in Selby near Leeds, is 550,000 sq ft and has the capacity to produce up to 3,000 homes per year, employing hundreds of local people who are being trained in new, crucial technology.
Each modular home is precision-engineered to ensure accuracy of build. The methods of production are the most up-to-date possible and each home goes through a series of quality assurance checks before it leaves the factory for its final destination as someone’s new home.
Legal & General says: “Our Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach enables high-volume production of affordable, high performance homes that are comfortable to live in, efficient to maintain and great for the environment.”
