A fifth of all home buyers say they move home because they need to provide financial support for relatives. The Strutt & Parker Housing Futures report also suggests that more than half of people moving house do so to get better digital connectivity.

The first Housing Futures survey was carried out in 2013, and estate agents Strutt & Parker compared the findings of the original survey with the latest results.

Importance of staying connected

They discovered that 22 percent of movers now get on the market to help their relatives out financially, compared to 15 percent in 2013.

And 57 percent do so for better broadband, compared to 48 percent five years ago, reflecting the increased importance of staying connected for many people.

Meanwhile, the UK's cities continue their revival as a desired destination for living - 15 percent of those quizzed by OnePoll on behalf of Strutt & Parker for the survey said urban living was their preferred option.

OnePoll spoke to almost 1,800 buyers, sellers, tenants and letting agents between October and December 2017 for Housing Futures.

Among the most popular reasons for moving (66 percent) was better access to local shops and amenities, as well as better public transport and digital connections.

Influenced by economic uncertainty

Financial turbulence and economic uncertainty has a strong influence on movers, with 43 percent of those quizzed in 2017 stating they had moved because of personal finances, compared to 33 percent in 2013.

Again 66 percent of those polled said they were moving because they wanted more privacy, compared to 54 percent five years ago. And a third (34 percent) said they had taken their wellbeing into consideration, up from 29 percent in the first Housing Futures survey.
