Buying a house in Wiltshire

Lush countryside, picture-perfect villages and the most famous prehistoric monument in the world combine to make Wiltshire a home mover's dream.

This rural county is certainly far from the madding crowds, unless you count those gathering for the summer solstice at Stonehenge. With green belt status keeping Wiltshire free of any urban sprawl, it's no wonder property here is in demand.

Where are Wiltshire's best home-mover destinations?

Wiltshire is very much a rural county with only a couple of large urban areas, including Swindon in the north and the cathedral city of Salisbury in the south. The historic market town of Trowbridge is an appealing location, particularly for commuters, thanks to its easy access to the M4.

Other market towns are Malmesbury, Chippenham and historic and atmospheric Devizes with its narrow, cobbled streets and close proximity to Salisbury Plain.

Amesbury has its own amazing history, the settlement here thought to predate nearby Stonehenge by 5,000 years. Archaeologists believe the first residents moved here in around 8820BC, making Amesbury the oldest, continuously inhabited town in the UK.

For chocolate-box perfection, look to the villages of Broad Chalke and Stourton.

Which council has control of schooling in Wiltshire?

The two local authorities responsible for provide state education services in Wiltshire are the Borough of Swindon Council and Wiltshire County Council.

There are also many independent schools to choose from in the county.

Did you know?

Salisbury Cathedral was completed in just 38 years, opening for worship in 1258, and its 404ft spire is the tallest in the UK.

The 29-lock stretch of the Kennet & Avon Canal near Devizes is the longest continuous flight of locks on any canal in the UK. Running for two miles, this series of locks takes the canal 230 feet up Caen Hill. It takes five hours for boats to pass through the system.
