What is going to change in the world of property law?

The first few months of this year will be busy for the conveyancing industry, as buy-to-let and second home buyers rush to avoid the 3% rise in stamp duty. This rise was announced in 2015 by George Osborne and is set to happen on 1st April.

Also on the agenda are some regulatory changes, which could possibly lead to major brands looking to provide conveyancing services.

The trading body for the conveyancing industry, the Conveyancing Association has set out some aims for the new year:

  • An ongoing focus on speeding up the leasehold process, also making it fairer
  • The launch of a second edition of CA's Conveyancing Protocol, intended to streamline industry processes
  • Conveyancing Academy to launch new training courses for paralegals, non-conveyancers and estate agents, as well as the industry as a whole
  • The launch of a Cyber Security and Property Fraud Protocol, answering many questions asked at the Modern Law Conveyancing Conference in December
  • Further expansion of the Conveyancing Foundation, through CA's charity work

Eddie Goldsmith, chairman of the Conveyancing Association, said: "The process of purchasing property is under great scrutiny and there's no doubting the government is looking to make the house-buying process more ‘consumer friendly'. Therefore, as an industry we have to expect and welcome greater competition and make sure we raise our game in order to offer better service levels to all."

Goldsmith added: "There's no doubting in our mind that we have the potential to develop a much more user-friendly conveyancing experience for all and we are working in a number of areas to develop this."
